Best roofing shingles for Florida: the six brands compared

Wind warranties, Class 4 options and the fine print for six major shingle brands sold in Florida.

Published September 27, 2026 · Shingle brands

This guide compares six major shingle brands sold in Florida. All six make an architectural shingle with a lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects, and all six make an impact-resistant version. The differences that matter in Florida are in the wind warranty and what installation it requires.

Short answer: the brand matters less than the installer and the installation method. Ask which shingle line the quote uses, what wind speed the warranty covers, and which starter strips and ridge caps are required to get it. Then make sure that’s what the contract says.

What each brand is known for

GAF Timberline HDZ

GAF’s flagship architectural shingle. Its WindProven warranty has no wind speed cap and no named-storm exclusion, but only when the roof uses the required GAF accessories. GAF lists Timberline HDZ as State of Florida approved and Miami-Dade product control approved. The standard HDZ is rated UL 2218 Class 3 for impact; ArmorShield II is Class 4.

Owens Corning Duration

Known for the SureNail strip, a wide nailing zone that makes correct nailing easier. Duration carries a 130 mph wind warranty with a 4-nail install. Duration, Duration STORM and Duration FLEX are all covered by a current Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA 26-0331.12). STORM and FLEX are the Class 4 versions.

CertainTeed Landmark

Landmark’s base wind warranty is 110 mph, and it rises to 160 mph when CertainTeed starter and hip and ridge are used. It includes a 25-year algae warranty and 10 years of SureStart coverage. ClimateFlex is the Class 4 version with the same warranty terms.

Atlas Pinnacle Pristine and StormMaster

Atlas builds Scotchgard Protector algae resistance into its shingles and uses a larger HP42 shingle size. StormMaster Shake is Class 4 with a 150 mph wind warranty and a Florida product approval (FL 16305). Read our Atlas shingles guide.

TAMKO Heritage and Titan XT

Heritage carries up to a 130 mph wind warranty with TAMKO’s high-wind application. Titan XT raises that to 160 mph with TAMKO starter and hip and ridge, and TAMKO lists Florida Building Code approvals for it. StormFighter FLEX is TAMKO’s Class 4 shingle.

IKO Dynasty and Nordic

Dynasty and Nordic both carry 130 mph wind warranties and use IKO’s ArmourZone nailing strip. IKO lists Miami-Dade product approval and Florida Building Code HVHZ approval for both. Nordic is the Class 4 version.

Is an impact-resistant shingle worth it in Florida?

Class 4 shingles are built for hail, which is less of a threat in Florida than wind. They still help against wind-blown debris, and some Florida insurers offer a credit for them. Get the discount in writing from your insurer before you pay extra.

Questions to ask about any shingle quote

  1. Which exact shingle line is in the price, and which color?
  2. What wind speed does the warranty cover with your installation method?
  3. Are the maker’s starter strips, ridge caps and underlayment included? Some warranties require them.
  4. Will you register the warranty with the manufacturer, and am I getting a copy?
  5. Is your company certified by the manufacturer for any enhanced warranty?
