Scotchgard algae protection
Black streaks on Florida roofs are algae, and the humidity here makes it common. Atlas uses 3M Scotchgard Protector in its granules and backs Pinnacle Pristine with a lifetime algae resistance limited warranty, as long as compatible Scotchgard hip and ridge shingles are installed with it. Most other brands offer 10 to 25 years of algae coverage.
What HP42 means
HP42 shingles are 42 inches wide and 14 inches tall with a 6-inch exposure, larger than the standard size. Atlas says they install about 10% faster and carry a 130 mph wind warranty with a four-nail install. HP42 is now standard on StormMaster Shake, Pinnacle Pristine and ProLam.
Is Atlas a good choice in Florida?
Atlas is a reasonable choice if your roofer installs it regularly and registers the warranty. Pinnacle Pristine is its everyday architectural shingle. StormMaster Shake is the pick if you want Class 4 impact resistance and the highest Atlas wind warranty. Whatever brand you choose, the installer and the installation method matter more.
