How the satellite roof measurement works
- We find the building at your address and pull Google’s aerial roof data, which models each roof section’s sloped area and pitch.
- We add the sections together and convert square meters to square feet.
- We add 10% for waste, the standard allowance roofers use when ordering material, and divide by 100 to get roofing squares.
- Steep roofs get a labor adjustment, because crews need more safety gear and time on them.
How accurate is it?
It is close enough to budget and to check whether contractor quotes use a sensible roof size. It is not a substitute for a measurement on site. Trees and shade over the roof, additions built after the imagery date, and detached garages or sheds can make the number run low or high. A roofer confirms the exact size before a final contract.
What is a roofing square?
A square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofers price and order material by the square. A 2,000 square foot house often has 22 to 30 squares of roof, depending on pitch, overhangs and roof shape. Roof surface is almost always larger than the home’s floor area.

Can I measure my roof from satellite for free?

Why is my roof bigger than my house’s square footage?
Roof surface includes overhangs and the extra area created by pitch. A steeper roof has more surface over the same floor plan.
Does the measurement include my garage or shed?
It measures the main building at your address, which normally includes an attached garage. Detached buildings usually aren’t included. Tell your roofer if you want them priced.
